Before talking about this topic in class, I kind of knew a little bit of information here and there. I had an idea about copyright and how you have to have permission to use and publish for others to use. In English classes, we are always told to have the “copyright” or “citing” our sources from where we get our information from. I know it is very important to give credit to authors that you took information from. Before preparing for class, I honestly do not know the definition of “fair use”. I could probably make an educated guess but I really do not know or have learned anything about “fair use”. Same thing with curation tools. I have never heard of that term, so there is honestly nothing that I can say about knowing anything. I think that this topic is interesting and very important because people plagiarize all of the time because they do not know what needs to be cited or how to. In this class and preparing for class, I am curious to learn what curation tools are and what they mean. Also, I am curious to know what “fair use” is and if I and my teachers have been following this rule. I would like to know these things because I want to make sure I am giving credit correctly to those who deserve it and also to make sure I am a good example for the kids I will teach someday.
In preparation for class, I learned that I actually know more about copyright then I think I did. I also learned that there is way more to copyrighting than I ever knew about. For instance, before prepping for this class, I knew that it is okay for teachers to use the work of other people if they give the credit and cite where they got the information from properly (http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com/Reasoning). Also, even before researching what “fair use” was, I knew that the act was put into place in order to limit the amount of copyrighting areas such as music and to protect the rights of the owners (http://www.cyberbee.com/cb_copyright.swf). Another topic I knew about before prepping for this class was that if you are not able to find the copyright information, you are not allowed to just use it, you must write a note to the website or email the person who “owns” the information to ask permission to use that information (http://www.cyberbee.com/cb_copyright.swf) . I know this because I had a problem last year citing a source for my research paper and I had to write the author of the article to get permission to use her information. Preparing for this class made me realize how specific the rules of copyrighting are. Like a student may only have one copy of someone else’s work, otherwise it is not allowed (http://www.halldavidson.net/copyright_chart.pdf) . Also, teachers are not allowed to show full films to students without buying the educational rights to them. I also learned about fair use and how it is kind of the permission process of copyrighting (http://www.halldavidson.net/copyright_chart.pdf). I also learned what curation tools were and how they collect or hold information that you save on them. This made me think about how I have been using curation tools all of the time without even knowing I was. It makes sense because we hold all of our information on our computers in folders, meaning that our folders are curation tools. All of this makes sense to me. Some questions that came up as I was preparing for class was if there are so many rules protecting the rights and regulation of things such as music, why is it so easy to illegally download them from the internet? Also, how come my teachers when I was a kid broke so many of these rules like not showing full movies in class or only giving students one copy of someone else’s work? Were they ignorant or ignoring the rules?
My understanding of this topic has become much more open and has grown a lot more than before we started discussing it in class. First off, I thought I knew so much about copyrighting, but I was wrong. I thought it was plain and simple, just cite where you got your information from. But it ended up being way more than that. There are so many limitations and guidelines you must follow otherwise it is considered breaking the law. Also, I learned what fair use is and the four factors that make fair use work. Lastly, we learned about curation tools, what they were, and how to use them. Overall, my beliefs have changed because now I see how much more important this topic is and how it is way more complex of a system than I originally thought it to be.I still have that question of if there are so many limitations and regulations to prohibit people breaking copyright laws, why is it so easy to download illegal things such as movies or music that clearly break the copyright law? This source is a website created by the government to answer popular questions that have been asked about copyright. Here they answer questions like “what is copyright”, “what and how does it protect”, and how it works. It also gives instructions about how to make it possible to make your own copyright for your information. There are different tabs that you can click on to find out more about copyrighting in the news and also the specific laws about copyrighting and historical documents about it. I think this resource is very helpful and useful because as a new teacher, I do not know all of the laws and guidelines that go along with copyrighting. This resource will help if I have any questions because it lists out lots of frequently asked questions and the answers to those questions. Also, there is a “contact us” page where I can use to ask for help if I have a question. Personally, I think this is very useful and I will use it in my classroom someday as a reference.

This site describes limitations on things such as text, media, photographs, data, and so on. It also discusses frequently asked questions about copyright and fair use. This website is very helpful because first, off it gives in depth information about copyright. This means that I can cross reference the information from this site and the other site to make sure that the information that I have is correct. Also, this website discusses information about fair use and when it is considered fair use or not. This is very important to know because as a teacher, I need to make sure that I am legally obtaining and using information/media/text.
