What does flipping a classroom mean?A Flipped Classroom is when the teacher swaps learning the information and homework activities. This means that in a traditional classroom, most of the time is lectures on learning the information and then the student will go home to do activities to make the information more concrete. In some people’s eyes, this is not very effective because shouldn’t the activities be implemented in the classroom and watched over by the teacher to make sure that the students truly understand the information? So instead of the traditional classroom, the flipped classroom was born. The flipped classroom involves the students watching videos, lectures, and tutorials outside of the classroom to learn the information on their own. This is so the students can come into the classroom with their knowledge of the material to do hands-on activities to show their learning. During this time, students can also ask questions about some of the information if they need help. This is used to make their time in class more efficient.
This is my flipped class for students to learn and practice the alphabet and numbers in ASL. Here you can see the objectives, what students should go before class, during class, and synthesizing after class.

Flipped classrooms can be included in many areas and subjects. To flip a classroom, the teacher must first let the students know that it is happening, so they know that they have to prepare for class. Next, the teacher should have up directions of what they are to do to prepare for class and what they will be expected to do in class, so the students will know what they must do. Teachers can put up videos, lectures, and tutorials for the students to go through and watch to absorb the material. They also may have assignments up for students to complete in order to have accountability of the students. For example, I made a schoology course labeled: Introduction to American Sign Language and Culture. In my flipped class, I wrote out all of the objectives that they should be able to do after this lesson, what they should do before class, what they should be doing during the class, and what to do after the class. Also I uploaded a video of examples of what the students should be able to do. My flipped classroom is for students to help students practice the alphabet and numbers. This is so they can learn the information and practice the information before coming into the classroom and discussing what they have learned and practice.

Why and when is flipping appropriate?Flipping classrooms can be appropriate when there are certain criteria in place. Flipping classrooms can be very effective in teaching children and giving them time in class to work with the materials hands-on. In order for this to be effective, a few things need to be in place. First off, the teacher must be fully applying himself or herself to doing this. If the teachers are not fully in this and do not keep up with putting up the material, obviously the students cannot learn the information. Secondly, you have to make sure that all students have access to some type of technology device at home or at the library. If the students do not have a way to look at the information, the students will not be able to look at the information. Next, as the teacher, you must make a way to make the students accountable for doing the online work. If there is no accountability, how will the teacher make sure the students are actually doing their work? It could be anything from an assignment, to a discussion, to a small quiz. Flipped learning is also a great way for parents to get involved with the student’s learning and understand what they are learning because the parents are able to learn the learning material. Flipped classrooms can be a great method to teaching students, only if it is done appropriately and correctly. Some students enjoy learning on their own and coming into class ready to apply their learning, and some students like learning from the teacher. The great thing about flipped classroom is that both students get what they want: students learn on their own and then come into the classroom where they can ask questions and get explanations. If I have a classroom that meets all of this criteria, I might use this type of method in my classroom.
